Review: südback Bolsters Position in Germany and Eastern Europe

Over 700 exhibitors presented product novelties, innovative concepts and solutions pertaining to baking to around 37,000 visitors, on a total surface area of 55,000 sqm, at südback 2017. The far was held from September 23 to 26, in Stuttgart, Germany.

According to a survey conducted by the organizers of the trade fair, over a quarter (27%) of the visitors work in company management, while 77% said they participate in purchasing and procurement decisions in their company.

Definite intentions to buy and invest were expressed by 37% of those surveyed. For 32%, an investment volume of EUR50k or more was involved. This makes südback the “most important trade fair in Germany and central Europe,” says Julia Kneidinger from the Marketing department at König Maschinen GmbH. “The whole sector meets here: the most important exhibitors and visitors, both from industry and the handcrafts. A positive factor was the very high share of decision-makers. We therefore expect good post-trade-fair business.”

Particularly in demand were raw materials and semi-finished products (44% of visitors), working and operating technology (29%) and raw materials from biological/ecological cultivation (22%). Most of the visitors (85%) rated the range of offers as entirely convincing and are planning to visit the next Südback again (79%). Most want to recommend the trade fair to friends and colleagues (89%) and almost every second visitor believes südback will be even more important for the sector in the future.

Event organizers and partners also expressed their satisfaction: “südback combines tradition and innovation in a unique way, which is also increasingly appreciated outside of Germany,” says president of Messe Stuttgart, Ulrich Kromer von Baerle. Visitors from over 80 countries attended the trade fair – mainly from Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, France, Russia, the Netherlands, Romania and Hungary.

Klaus Vollmer, the Guild Master of the Baden-Württemberg Regional Association of Guilds of Confectioners, gave a similarly positive summary of the event: “The specialized arrangement of the halls was optimized, and very well received by the trade fair visitors.”

Martin Reinhardt, the Guild Master of the State Association of Guilds for Württemberg Bakers, confirmed: “südback is a must for every handcraft business, as it offers both innovations and a high degree of specialization.” The success of the trade fair comprises “many components,” as Holger Knieling, managing partner of BÄKO-Zentrale Süddeutschland eG (BÄKO Head Office of Southern Germany), emphasized. “All [parties] involved learn continuously, and that’s what has made südback better year after year.”

The next Südback will take place from September, 21-24, 2019, at Messe Stuttgart.
