Which? Warns Against EC Move to Ditch Nutrient Profiling PDF Print E-mail
Written by admin
Consumer watchdog Which? is leading calls for the European Commission, member states and MEPs to back proposals for nutrient profiling.

The calls were made following the European Parliament's vote in favour of ditching nutrient profiling on packaging.

Which? claims this would lead to unhealthy foods falsely claiming they were healthy.

Furthermore the consumer champion wants to see stricter criteria introduced for nutrient profiling on foods such as doughnuts, milk shakes and sausages - all of which could claim to be healthy under the existing draft proposal.

Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, said: "When foods like jam doughnuts can make health claims, then it's time to go back to the drawing board. Ditching nutrient profiles is like throwing the baby out with the bath water as it paves the way for all manner of unhealthy foods to claim to have health benefits.
"The only way to address this is to keep nutrient profiles, but with more scientifically robust criteria to ensure that consumers aren't misled by foods making spurious health claims."

Research by Which? showed that four out of five people in England wants to follow a healthy diet.
