Several major Australian food manufacturers have agreed to reduce salt levels in their bread and cereal products as part of government lead initiative, the Food and Health Dialogue.

George Weston Foods, Goodman Fielder Baking, Allied Mills, Cripps Nubake, Woolworths, Coles and ALDI were among firms who agreed to reduce salt in bread products to 400mg per 100 grams by the end of 2013.

A further 15 per cent reduction in breakfast cereal products was pledged by Kellogg Co., Sanitarium, Cereal Partners Worldwide, Woolworths, Coles and ALDI within four years.

More than 80 per cent of the Australian bread market's manufacturers agreed to the measures with around 60 per cent of the market share agreeing for cereals.

Australian parliamentary secretary for health, Mark Butler, said: "Agreed targets give industry a level playing field and certainty on expectations.

"Bread and breakfast cereals are the first of several food categories being prioritised by the Food and Health Dialogue to improve Australian diets."
