Nestlé USA announced it has officially removed all synthetic FD&C (Food, Drug & Cosmetics)colors from its U.S. food and beverage portfolio by June 15. Originally, the company made the commitment to do this by mid-2026. This action came from the national push to companies that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) made in April 2025 to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the food supply.
Every recipe that contained these colors mentioned in Nestlé’s portfolio has been changed to accommodate the new standard. The company reports that they have been either removed or replaced with alternative natural solutions and claims that the taste of the products hasn’t changed.
As companies across the U.S. switch to the new regulations, the FDA has been approving and expanding some natural color options to support the transition. Some of the natural colorants approved so far include beetroot red and spirulina extract.
