Whole Earth Launches Allulose Sweetener Range in Australia

Whole Earth has launched an allulose sweetener range in Australia, positioning the ingredient as a low-calorie alternative to conventional sugar for applications including cooking and baking.

The company describes its Allulose product as a 100% natural, zero-sugar sweetener containing three calories per serving. Whole Earth also says the product is vegan and gluten-free and is designed to perform similarly to conventional sugar in recipes.

Allulose is a naturally occurring “rare sugar” found in small quantities in certain foods. Whole Earth is positioning the ingredient primarily as a replacement for consumers seeking to reduce their intake of conventional sugar without substantially changing the taste and texture of finished products.

For bakery applications, the company is emphasising allulose’s functional characteristics rather than sweetness alone, including its ability to brown and caramelise during processing.

“One of the things I enjoy most about Allulose is how well it performs in cooking and baking. It caramelises beautifully, browns similarly to sugar and provides the texture many other sweeteners struggle to achieve,” said Malissa Fedele, Whole Earth ambassador and nutritionist.

The company said the characteristics allow allulose to be used in products where alternatives to sugar can otherwise create challenges around colour development and texture. Whole Earth is promoting applications including cakes, breads and cookies, with Fedele using the ingredient in recipes such as cinnamon swirl banana bread and bakery-style cookies.

The Australian launch comes as Whole Earth seeks to address consumer demand for products with reduced conventional sugar and calorie content while retaining familiar eating qualities. The company said the Allulose range is intended to provide a straightforward sugar substitute for consumers who do not want to compromise on the performance of sugar during cooking and baking.
