Weston Foods to Close Bakery in Cobourg, Canada

Weston Foods prepares to close its bakery in Cobourg, Ontario, in the second half of 2020, leading to up to 180 jobs loss.

A consultant for the company confirmed the news for Northumberland News. “Weston Foods has made the difficult decision to close our Cobourg, Ontario, bakery in the second half of 2020. Production from this facility will be relocated to other bakeries in the Weston Foods network,” reads a media statement issued to Northumberland News during the afternoon.

Employees were informed earlier in the day. Initial reports are suggesting, though unconfirmed at this time, that the closure is expected in June.

“Regrettably, up to 180 jobs will be lost. This equates to a decrease of less than 4% in our total workforce,” said Weston Foods.

Just last year, at about this time, it was announced that Maplehurst Bakeries was expanding due to more demand for their cakes.

The Cobourg bakery has been part of Weston Foods, the parent company of Maplehurst Bakeries, since 1994 – known then as the Weston Fruit Cake Company.
