Burton’s Foods, the number two branded player and second largest biscuit supplier in the UK, has announced it will become the first sweet biscuit company to acquire GreenPalm certificates for 100 per cent of its palm oil usage.
The company has committed to covering the entire of its palm and palm kernel oil use with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil‘s (RSPO) internationally recognised GreenPalm scheme.
Jo Shears, head of CSR at Burton’s Foods, said: “We are delighted to be able to kick-start 2010 with such a major step forward for our CSR programme – baking a difference. Moving forward, consumers will be reassured that when purchasing some of the UK’s favourite brands such as Jammie Dodgers and Maryland that they are making environmentally responsible purchasing decisions.”
By acquiring the GreenPalm certificate to cover the use of palm oil throughout the whole of its product range, Burton’s has committed to pay a voluntary premium to palm oil producers for oil used, who are operating within the RSPO’s strict guidelines for social and environmental responsibility.
By 2013 the company hopes, through working closely with its palm oil supplier, a founding member of the RSPO, to use segregated sustainable material throughout the entire product range.
Shears, added: “Burton’s has supported the drive towards palm oil sustainability since 2006, when we became a member of the RSPO. In 2008, we were one of the first companies to purchase the initial RSPO certified segregated palm oil into the UK. We believe it is right to work towards a sustainable future and continue our journey in sustainable purchasing.”
