Craft beer maker Toast Ale is making surplus bread into beer for a new food waste charity campaign.
After researchers found that 24 million slices of bread are currently thrown away by UK households and 15 million tons of food is wasted across the UK, Toast Ale launched a Crowdfunder campaign to launch two new products – Toast Craft Lager and Toast Session IPA All the profits from the sale of the eco-friendly beer will go to the charity Feedback. The charity aims to halve food waste by 2030.
“In our first year, we’ve brewed over 2 tons of surplus, fresh bread. But that’s just the beginning. Our ambition is to save more than 100 tons within three years. To do this, we want to expand our range beyond our existing Pale Ale. And that’s why we’re here. All funds raised will be used to develop and brew two new beer styles – a Session IPA and a Craft Lager,” the crowdfunder’s team explains.
Toast Ale needs to reach the target of GBP20k to start production of the bottles of beer, made from unsold, surplus fresh bread, otherwise thrown away by bakeries and sandwich makers.
Rob Wilson, Chief Toast at Toast Ale says: “Adding more brews to the range will mean that more surplus bread has a use, more money will be made for Feedback, and there will be two more great drinks for people to enjoy. We hope to put ourselves out of business – the day there’s no waste bread is the day Toast Ale can no longer exist.”
