Geary’s Bakery Opens New GBP 36m Leicester Facility to Meet Sourdough Demand

Geary’s Bakery has opened a new GBP 36m custom-built facility in Leicester to expand production of its sourdough bread, responding to continued growth in demand. The site, the company’s third, will double capacity and create 380 new jobs, bringing total headcount to 950 by the end of 2025.

The expansion marks a major step in Geary’s long-term growth strategy as both its branded and own-label operations continue to scale. The new bakery will come online in two phases, with the first phase operational and the second set for completion in September.

Jason Geary, fourth-generation master baker, described the opening as a pivotal moment: “This new site enables us to get our products into more stores and homes, while staying true to the quality and craft that set us apart. It’s a vital part of our ambition to make proper bread more accessible.”

The company’s sourdough range, sold under its leading brand, is now available in 4,000 stores across the UK and accounts for roughly half of Geary’s turnover. In the last 12 months alone, the brand has grown in value by 107%.

Alongside site investment, Geary’s is also building workforce skills. Thirteen apprentices are currently training in bakery, engineering, and operations, while eight lead bakers are being recruited.

Now the UK’s fourth largest bread brand and a market leader in sourdough, Geary’s aims to double its business in the coming years, reinforcing its position in the premium bread segment and supporting growth for its retail partners.
