Morocco seeks wheat supply from India

Morocco Foreign Trade Minister Abdellatif Maazouz has sought supply of rice and wheat from India, which is sitting on huge stocks of the foodgrains.

India has banned exports of wheat and non-basmati rice. However, the country has shipped small quantity of wheat and rice via diplomatic route.

“Our trade with India is not at same level. We want to push them because we believe we have lot of synergy between our economies,” said Maazouz after meeting Food Minister K V Thomas.

Morocco can be a useful platform for Indian farm products, besides textiles. “Yes, we have requested for rice and wheat supplies from India,” he told reporters.

Thomas said the policy decision on Morocco’s request will be first considered by the External Affairs Ministry

The North African country has not specified the quantity of wheat and rice it requires as of now. It has also not been decided whether to export foodgrains to Morocco on government-to-government basis or through private parties, he noted.
