Packaging Design Challenge to inspire innovation at Pro2Pac

Some of the UK’s most innovative packaging designers and manufacturers have entered this year’s Packaging Design Challenge taking place at Pro2Pac from 13-16 March.

Five entrants will showcase their innovative concepts at the Challenge, each creating a design to fit one of three categories: Retail Ready Packaging; Food on the Go; and Luxury Food and Drink Packaging. Entries will take into account issues facing the sector today, for example environmental benefits, brand image, convenience and safety and hygiene.

Archana Sharma, Marketing Manager at Reed Exhibitions, the organisers behind Pro2Pac said: “We’re delighted with the variety of entrants – who range from small, independent designers to larger, established manufacturers. The briefs we have received look extremely exciting and we encourage visitors to the show to come along and vote for their favourite ideas.”

Bapco Closures and Coulthard Designs have combined forces to enter the Luxury Food and Drink Packaging category with a concept that will take a premium chocolate brand and transfer it to the consumer chocolate spread category. The entry will revolve around its innovative Bap closure Technology.

In the Food On The Go category, F8 Design will provide a practical, convenient and nutritious solution for UK music festival-goers. The shape of the product will cleverly represent the brand name and is 100% recyclable. F8 has worked in conjunction with Contact Print & Packaging (Stockport) on the carton design.

R J Johnston & Son’s concept – in the same category – is an all-encompassing container whereby the contents can be eaten without the need to open separate pots. A hygienic design – it does not require any hand contact to be made with the food material prior to consumption.

Designer Alison Bateman will be showcasing her cardboard cup holder for transporting takeaway beverages, named ‘Handle-it’. The concept will allow consumers to slip a collar over a cup, rotate the handle and carry drinks away from festivals or shops with ease.

In the Retail Ready Packaging category, Sirane’s ovenable and microwavable bags and pouches are ideal for serving fish and meat over the counter in-store, as they allow the consumer to choose their cut, add butter, and seal the bag using the self seal tape before taking home to cook in the bag.

Pro2Pac visitors should go to the Packaging Design Challenge zone to view concepts and vote for their favourite idea. The entry with the most votes will be crowned winner on the final day of the show.
