US Consumer Price Index Bakery Rise

The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for baked goods and cereal products rose 0.2 per cent in July.

Figures from the US Department of Labor show the July index for cereals and bakery products before seasonal adjustment was 253.4 per cent of the 1982-84 average, up 11.4 per cent from a year ago.

The price index for bakery products in July was 268.6, down 0.5 per cent from June but up 0.7 per cent from July 2008.

The July index for bread was 163.9, up 0.7 per cent from June but down 0.5 per cent from July 2008. The CPI for white bread was 301.3, up 0.6 per cent from June but down 0.4 per cent from July 2008. For bread other than white, the index was 310, up 0.5 per cent from June but down 0.8 per cent from a year ago.

For all food at home, the July index was 213.8, down 0.5 per cent from June and down 0.9 per cent from July 2008.

The index for all food at home fell 0.5 per cent – its sixth straight month of declines.

Meanwhile, the average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread rose 0.6c per lb and 2.7c per lb in July.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 139.1c per lb and whole wheat bread 187.5c per lb. The average price was down 5.8c per lb from July 2008.
The national average price of family flour in July was 51.9c per lb, up 0.3c from June but down 2.5c from July 2008.
