Gluten-free Product Market in Western Europe to Reach EUR 11.6 billion by 2018

Gluten free bread continues to rise in popularity in Europe. No surprise then that Italian based gluten free producer Dr Schar has this week announced plans for new capacity in Spain, according to FFT blog.

The company is to invest EUR 11.5 million in a new production line at its factory in Zaragoza specializing in gluten free sweet bread and rolls. Many consumers in Europe and elsewhere now associate gluten-free foods with both losing weight and increased energy. Additionally the millennial generation, those born between 1980 and 2000, are prepared to pay a premium for gluten free

products, with more concentrated marketing activity from manufacturers in the sector raising the profile. In many countries gluten free has been transformed into a consumer lifestyle choice.

The gluten free bread products market in Western Europe was worth EUR 10.7 billion in 2015 according to FFT latest report and is forecast to rise by almost 9% to reach EUR 11.6 billion by 2018.

Dr Schar is already ranked number one in terms of market supply in the region according to our research, with a 23% share. Further investments in capacity as the –glutenfree sector continues to grow will undoubtedly help to consolidate this leading position.
