Greggs Closes All UK Outlets to Fight Coronavirus

British bakery Greggs, a chain with more than 2,050 outlets, announced it is closing all its shops on Tuesday night (March 24) to help maintain social distancing in the fight against the coronavirus crisis.

Prime minister Boris Johnson has told restaurants and cafés to close, but has exempted takeaway food places.

Greggs, which has about 25,000 employees, had already converted its stores to provide solely a takeaway service.

“Whilst our shops will be temporarily closed, our dedication to our communities won’t stop. We’ll continue to provide support to our local communities by distributing any remaining unsold food and offering support for those in hardship through the Greggs Foundation,” Roger Whiteside, Greggs’ CEO, said.
