Vandemoortele Acquires Délifrance, Expanding European Bakery Footprint

Vandemoortele has continued its acquisition streak with the purchase of French frozen bakery specialist Délifrance from grain cooperative Vivescia Group. The deal follows recent takeovers of Bunge’s European margarine and spreads assets and Italy’s Lizzi frozen bakery business.

The acquisition positions Vandemoortele as a major European bakery player, forming a EUR2.4bn group serving retail and foodservice markets. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Délifrance, considered one of Europe’s leading frozen bakery manufacturers, reported sales of around EUR930m in the year to June. The company runs 14 production sites, employs over 3,200 people, and serves customers across Europe and Asia.

With 28 plants and a 3,500-strong workforce, Belgium-based Vandemoortele generates EUR1.4bn in bakery sales through brands like Banquet d’Or, Lanterna, and private label partnerships across Europe and the US. Other recent deals include Dolciaria Acquaviva in Italy and a majority stake in US-based Banneton.

The integration of Délifrance will broaden Vandemoortele’s portfolio in viennoiserie, Danish pastries, and artisanal breads.

“This combination creates powerful synergies in growth, customer service, product innovation, and branding,” said Vandemoortele CEO Yvon Guerin, noting the group’s robust investment plans.

The transaction is subject to competition clearance and consultation with employee representatives.
