ADM, Asahi Group Sign Exclusive Deal for Postbiotic Targeting Stress, Mood, Sleep

U.S. agribusiness giant ADM has signed an exclusive agreement with Japan’s Asahi Group Foods to market and distribute Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305, a postbiotic designed to support stress, mood, and sleep, the companies said.

Backed by eight human clinical trials, the ingredient will be added to ADM’s expanding portfolio of health and wellness solutions at a time when demand for mood and relaxation products is rising. Between 2018 and 2023, the category grew at a compound annual growth rate of 13%, with an overall market expansion of nearly 34%.

“Stress, mood, and sleep are among the fastest-growing wellness segments,” said Mark Lotsch, president of global health and wellness at ADM. “This partnership with Asahi Group strengthens our ability to deliver science-backed solutions that improve consumers’ quality of life.”

Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305 was developed by Asahi Group through research on Calpis-derived lactic acid bacteria. While Asahi will continue to use the ingredient in its supplements and beverages sold in Japan, ADM will begin distributing it to food manufacturers in North America, Europe, and Asia from March.

“Asahi is committed to solving global food and health challenges,” said Kazuhiro Hayashi, corporate officer and senior general manager at Asahi Group Foods. “Our partnership with ADM allows us to expand the reach of this innovative ingredient through their global network and R&D expertise.”

Postbiotics like L. gasseri CP2305 are gaining traction due to their ability to withstand high-heat and high-moisture conditions, making them suitable for functional foods, beverages, and supplement formats such as gummies. Clinical studies suggest the ingredient may support emotional well-being, reduce stress, improve sleep efficiency, and shorten sleep latency.

The deal bolsters ADM’s position in the microbiome health sector, complementing its existing portfolio, which includes probiotic Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 and postbiotic BPL1™ (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145).
