Grupo Bimbo, Nestle join initiative to tackle food waste in Latin America

The #SinDesperdicio (#NoWaste) platform is an initiative aimed at tackling food loss and waste in Latin America and the Caribbean.

#SinDesperdicio brings together members from the public and private sectors, who will pursue supporting initiatives under four areas of work: innovating projects, public policies national and local wise, generation of knowledge and responsible consumption habits.

The #SinDesperdicio platform will be led by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with partners from the private, public and civil society sectors. A number of companies from the food and technology sectors are participating, including Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, Femsa Foundation, Grupo Bimbo, IBM and Oxxo.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, more than 127 million tons of food are lost and wasted annually, or around 223 kilograms per person per year. This phenomenon takes place in a region where close to 42 million people suffer from acute undernutrition.

As a reinforcement of its commitment to combat poverty in the region, Grupo Bimbo, the world´s largest baking company is donating 1.4 million slices of bread to Food Banks, as a result of the kilometers ran by all Bimbo Global Energy Race participants, which in its 2018 edition, gathered over 110 thousand runners from 23 nations.
