Grupo Bimbo Acquires Ecuadorean Bread Maker Supán

Grupo Bimbo announced an agreement to acquire Supán, the leading bread producer in Ecuador, on July 15.

The transaction includes the Supan®, Bimbo®, Grile®, Braun®, Dulzones®, Rey-pan® and Pansol® brands in the packaged bread, buns and sweet baked goods segments.

“The transaction represents Grupo Bimbo’s debut into the Ecuadorian market, in line with the company’s strategy to further strengthen its footprint in the Americas.”

The business employs approximately 900 associates and operates two production facilities located in Guayaquil and Quito. The acquired business is expected to generate sales of over USD57 million.

The transaction ends a long dispute over the Ecuadorean company’s use of the Bimbo brand name in its home country, the Wall Street Journal reports: Monica Breton, a spokeswoman for the Mexican company, said all disputes will be withdrawn as a result of the acquisition.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Supán has two production plants, one in Guayaquil and another in Quito, the Ecuadorean capital. Grupo Bimbo’s expansion includes the recent  USD1.66 billion purchase of Canada Bread, which closed in May.
