Benner MSA Unveils Compact Multipack Machine with HERMA Labeling Technology

German machine builder Benner MSA has integrated HERMA 500 label applicators into one of the first multipack machines designed for medium-sized production runs, targeting products such as nuts, dried fruit, and cereal bars. The compact system, which occupies less than four square meters, processes 20 to 30 multipacks per minute, offering an efficient alternative to manual bundling.

Multipacks, which are popular with consumers and profitable for retailers, have traditionally required high-speed, single-format machines suited for mass production. Benner MSA’s solution fills a gap in the market, enabling mid-sized producers to bundle products using labels rather than excess packaging materials.

“There are existing label-based multipack systems, but they are designed for high-volume products and operate at speeds of up to 700 cycles per minute,” said Benner MSA Managing Director Ilyas Zorla. “For many suppliers in the snacks and dried goods sector, such speeds are unnecessary. Our system provides an efficient and cost-effective alternative.”

Precision Labeling with HERMA 500

The machine feeds pre-filled bags via a sloping conveyor to a height of two meters, where they are sorted into a compartmentalized belt. Two HERMA 500 label applicators then attach a perforated label, securing the multipack. The system is designed for bags measuring approximately 65 x 150 x 25 mm, though it can accommodate wider products with adjustable side guides.

Benner MSA collaborated with HERMA using an online configurator to develop a compact labeling solution without compromising precision. “The HERMA 500’s master encoder ensures labeling speed is synchronized with product movement, guaranteeing precise label placement,” said Zorla.

Patented Adaptation for Varied Packaging

The system also addresses inconsistencies in bag height, a common challenge with different product textures and air content. A patented compensation element offsets height variations of up to 15 mm, ensuring label accuracy. Additionally, the HERMA 500’s user-friendly interface simplifies setup and operation, making it accessible to operators with no prior labeling experience.

HERMA GmbH, headquartered in Filderstadt, Germany, is a leading European specialist in packaging and labeling. In 2023, the company generated EUR429.4m in revenue, with exports accounting for 64.2% of its business across its three divisions: Adhesive Materials, Labels, and Labeling Machines.
