Nestlé to Use Health Star Rating System on its Products

Nestlé will make the nutritional value of its global portfolio transparent in its yearly reporting, starting with the 2022 Annual Report. In 2023, Nestlé will also start reporting on local portfolios in 14 countries using their respective government-endorsed front-of-pack labeling systems. 

To continuously improve the nutritional value of its foods and beverages, the company will leverage its R&D capabilities and advanced nutrient profiling system. Additionally, it will expand its offering of affordable, nutritious foods and beverages. In 2021, Nestlé delivered 124.6 billion servings of affordable nutrition fortified with at least one of the following micronutrients of public health relevance: Iron, Iodine, Vitamin A and Zinc.

As part of its global reporting commitment, Nestlé will benchmark its food and beverages against the Health Star Rating (HSR) system, a nutrient profiling system used by the Access to Nutrition Index and on front-of-pack nutrition labels in some countries. HSR considers the total energy of a food, the amount of positive nutrients and ingredients, such as fiber, protein and legumes, as well as the amount of nutrients of concern, such as sugar, saturated fat and salt. HSR will provide a single basis of comparison for our broad, global offering of food and beverages across 186 countries, except for our specialized nutrition products.

To assist people in making informed food choices, Nestlé products will continue to display locally relevant front-of-pack nutrition labeling schemes, such as Nutri-Score, on a voluntary basis or as required by authorities. Nestlé also couples its offering with consumption guidance and services to support balanced eating.
