Sappi Introduces New Barrier Coating Technology

Sappi expanded its use of proprietary barrier coating technology by means of the acquisition of Rockwell Solutions. The new barrier coating technology for functional paper packaging will be put to use in the company’s specialty mill in Alfeld. Adding barrier coater capacity at this location upscales its capabilities and brings this combination of paper, dispersion, and coating technology to more customers.

“Expanding the use of our proprietary barrier coating technology underpins Sappi’s drive to maintain our leading position in barrier coated paper as well the commitment we have with our customers in developing innovative future-focused packaging solutions which contribute towards a sustainable future”, stated Berry Wiersum, CEO Sappi Europe. He also estimates that the company will begin commissioning the new products from mid-2022 and believes in delivering recyclable packaging solutions in line with the requirements of a circular economy.
