Franz Bakery Plans USD20M Expansion at Glenwood Facility

Franz Family Bakery is lobbying Lane County and Springfield officials for a property tax waiver on its proposed USD20m expansion in Glenwood. The expansion would add 45 jobs at the factory, which has slightly more than 200 employees.

The Portland-based company, also known as United States Bakery, wants five years of property tax breaks, totaling about USD1.1m in waivers, to help offset the cost of building the expansion to its 146,000sqf bread-making factory on Nugget Way, according to a memo attached to Springfield city councilors’ Monday meeting agenda.

The company last year proposed adding about 40,000 square feet of space to the plant, which opened in 2006.

Franz averaged 214 employees at its Glenwood plant during the past year, the memo states. Franz has eight bread bakeries across the Northwest.

Of the USD20m Springfield investment, USD10m would go toward the building addition and USD10m for new equipment and machinery, according to the Springfield memo.
