Tate & Lyle Secures Prebiotic Certification For Fibre Ingredients Used In Bakery Applications

London-based Tate & Lyle has received NutraStrong™ Prebiotic Verified certification for four product lines within its fibre portfolio, a development that could provide bakery manufacturers with additional assurance when formulating fibre-enriched and gut health-focused products.

The certification covers Tate & Lyle’s PROMITOR® Soluble Fibre, STA-LITE® Polydextrose, EUOLIGO® FOS and GOSYAN® GOS product ranges. According to the company, these ingredients are used across a variety of food and beverage applications, including bakery products, snacks, cereals, bars and dairy products.

As consumer interest in digestive health and fibre consumption continues to grow, ingredient suppliers and food manufacturers are increasingly seeking scientifically substantiated solutions that can support health-focused product positioning. Tate & Lyle said the certification provides independent, third-party verification of the quality, transparency and scientific evidence underpinning its prebiotic fibre portfolio.

The NutraStrong™ Prebiotic Verified programme is recognised and endorsed by the Global Prebiotic Association (GPA), of which Tate & Lyle is a member. Certification is awarded to ingredient brands that meet established standards for scientific substantiation, quality and transparency.

According to Tate & Lyle, the verification process included product specification and analytical review, confirmation of ingredient dosage supporting a prebiotic claim, including at least one randomised controlled trial demonstrating microbiome modulation and a resulting health benefit, as well as verification of laboratory and manufacturer accreditation.

The company said its fibre portfolio is supported by extensive scientific research. PROMITOR® Soluble Fibre alone is backed by more than 20 scientific studies, while hundreds of studies have been conducted across the broader portfolio.

The certified ingredients support a range of substantiated health benefit areas, including digestive health, mineral absorption for bone health, cognitive function, immunity, glycaemic control and satiety.

Commenting on the certification, Len Monheit, Executive Director of the Global Prebiotic Association, said: “The Global Prebiotic Association (GPA) congratulates Tate & Lyle on this achievement. GPA has been involved in this certification development, designed to elevate prebiotic products and suppliers who have clinically validated, dose-dependent substantiation.”

Katie Adolphus, Nutrition Science Lead, Fibres, Tate & Lyle, said: “This certification recognises the strength and depth of the science underpinning our fibre portfolio and our continued commitment to advancing evidence-based nutrition. The efficacy assessment confirms that each ingredient functions as a prebiotic and identifies the dosage range or minimum dose at which this effect has been demonstrated.

“For us, fibre innovation starts with human health. It must be grounded in credible science, translated responsibly, and ultimately delivered in ways that make a meaningful difference to everyday diets, without compromising taste. Independent verification like NutraStrong™ reinforces the quality, transparency and trust our customers expect from Tate & Lyle.”

Kevin Yan, Vice President of Product Certifications at SGS Nutrasource, said: “We would like to congratulate Tate & Lyle on this achievement– the company’s commitment to both the quality, transparency and robust science required for prebiotic certification across their broad, global portfolio and sites serves as an example to the industry. The NutraStrong™ programme is reserved for best-in-class branded ingredients and we are delighted to welcome Tate & Lyle to our ranks during what can be only described as the era of fibre. In a crowded and rapidly evolving fibre landscape, certification brings much-needed clarity, credibility, and confidence—for both brands and consumers.”

Fernanda Covarrubias, Global Marketing Manager, Fibres at Tate & Lyle, added: “We’re seeing strong momentum not only in consumer interest in gut health and prebiotic fibre claims, but also in how fibre is being formulated into a broader range of everyday foods and beverages.”

For bakery manufacturers, the certification highlights the growing role of functional ingredients in product development, particularly as producers seek ways to increase fibre content and support digestive health claims while maintaining product quality and taste.
