United Biscuits brands are back on the shelves following December floods

The manufacturer United Biscuits (UB) has announced the McVitie’s Ginger Nuts, Carr’s Water Biscuits and Crawford’s Custard Creams and Bourbons, have returned to supermarket shelves.

The production started again in the Carlisle factory after the plant was forced to close due to substantial flooding and damage caused by Storm Desmond in December last year.

The Carlisle factory is the only place in the world that makes the Carr’s Table Water Biscuit, with local spring water and the traditional brick oven being key ingredients in baking the unique taste of Carr’s that consumers know and love.

UB manufacturing director, Mark Taylor, said: “We take great pride in our biscuits and in being able to give people their favorite snacks. Our recipes and production methods are steeped in history as old as the Carr’s brand itself, so there was no question of moving to a temporary production site during closure. The support we have had from the local and wider community has been phenomenal, and it’s certainly shown what a big family we have here.”

United Biscuits is also a major employer in the Cumbria region. Approximately 640 local employees work throughout the factory across each stage of production from recipe development through to baking, quality testing naturally, packaging and then loading for delivery to ensure that only the best biscuits get out the door.

UB savory biscuits marketing director, Ted Linehan, said: “We make over 80,000 tonnes of biscuits a year and these reach all corners of the globe, so it was very important to us that we get our supply going quickly but without compromising on the flavor and quality that we know our customers expect. The support we have received from retailers and customers alike during this time has been incredible and we are grateful for this – it seems absence really does make the heart grow fonder. It’s good to be back.”

The Carr’s product line is the last one to re-start at the Carlisle Factory, and all United Biscuits products will now start to re-appear on UK consumers’ supermarket shelves for the nation to enjoy.
