südback Trend Award 2020 Honors Innovation for the Future

The südback Trend Award will be presented this year for the 13th time during südback 2020 from October 17 to 20.

“The top-class submissions impressively demonstrate how productive the industry is in actively shaping the future. Winning the südback Trend Award adds real value in the market”, said Prof. Michael Kleinert, jury chairman, about the distinctions that aim to reward innovation an progress.

The südback Trend Award is presented by Messe Stuttgart. The trade journals Allgemeine Bäcker-Zeitung (ABZ) and BÄKO-magazin support this competition as partners and it is organized together with the BÄKO Head Office and the Württemberg Regional Association of Bakers’ Guilds. The südback Trend Award has been presented since 2002 to honor companies in the baking industry that have made a special contribution in actively shaping the future.

The ever-quickening pace of change is one of the challenges companies are facing today, driven by globalization, new technologies, more demanding clients, but also by the vast quantity of available knowledge. In order to ensure their competitiveness in these conditions, companies must put new products on the market, lower costs, improve processes and convince their customers of their products and their company.

Three Categories

The companies can apply for the südback Trend Award in three categories, presenting fresh ideas and new products:

  • “Marketing, sales & organization” – covers themes such as shop construction/business equipment, packaging, merchandise, EDP and cash register systems.
  • “Raw materials & convenience” – includes, e.g., flours, flavorings, oils and fats, fillings, as well as TK products.
  • “Technology”.

Functional systems, complete installations, and individual parts or designs can be registered and submitted as competition entries. The deadline for entries is  May 31, 2020.

The competition is only open to innovations that have been on the market for less than one year or have been developed to market maturity and are about to be launched on the market. It must be possible to present the latter products at südback 2020 as series of products. All German and international companies in the industry are eligible to take part in the competition.

A jury evaluates the entries with regard to their level of innovation, benefit, and user-friendliness, their use or implementation with economically justifiable expense, functionality, operational safety, environmental compatibility, recycling, and hygiene.

The expert jury includes:

  • Michael Kleinert, Jury Chairman, Head of the Institute of Food and Beverage Innovation (ILGI)
  • Karin Becker, Branch Manager of the State Association of Guilds of Baden-Württemberg Confectioners
  • Jean-Pierre Nachtsheim, BÄKO-ZENTRALE eG, authorised officer, Department Director of Machines & Equipment

  • Falk Steins, Editor-in-Chief, BÄKO magazine

The winners are informed before südback starts so that they can use the quality seal beforehand to advertise their products and their forthcoming attendance at südback. In order to give due recognition to innovation, the award is presented during the official opening of südback.
