Sweden Wins the European Pastry Cup in Torino

Martin Morand and Jessica Sandberg succeeded to convince the jury after five hours of competition on June 10, in the Oval Lingotto Fiere of Torino, Italy, where the European Pastry Cup took place.

The Swedish team won the 2018 European Pastry Cup, and will defend their colors at the World Finale, taking place during Sirha in Lyon (France) in 2019.

The chefs presented breath-taking creations around the “Mother nature” theme.

The top three teams in Torino were:

Martin Morand (41)– Chocolate specialist – Pastry chef at Pastry Inspiration, St Olof

Jessica Sandberg (42)– Sugar specialist – Pastry shop Nya Konditoriet in Umeå

Jacky Bodart (32)– Chocolate specialist – Chocolaterie Darcis, Pepinster

Bernard Istasse (46)– Sugar specialist – Pastry shop Istasse Bernard, Lobbes

Antoine Chopin (22)– Chocolate specialist – Le Duo Creatif, La Tour de Peilz

Sara Bezencon (21)– Sugar specialist – Maison Eric Vuissoz, Sainte-Croix

Poland will also take the road to Lyon: thanks to their performance, Michal Doroszkiewicz and Marek Moskowa win a wild card that allows them to participate to the Finale.

Russia and Poland were awarded respectively “Special Chocolate Prize” and “Special Sugar Prize”, while Turkey also awarded “Eco-sustainable Prize”.

The Italian team, who was present in Torino but didn’t compete because already qualified as part of the Top 5 nations, just discovered at home the names of its rivals. Along with them, 13 already known nations will race during the World Finale, scheduled to take place in Lyon (France) in January 2019, during the Sirha Trade Show:

–           TOP 5 NATIONS: Italy, Japan, South Korea, UK & USA are part of the Top 5 nations and are automatically qualified thanks to their past performance.

–           4 LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES: Chile, Argentina, Mexico & Brazil continue the adventure after winning their ticket at the Copa Maya in April 2018 in Mexico City.

–           5 COUNTRIES FROM ASIA PACIFIC: Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan & China earned their place during the Asian Pastry Cup last May in Singapore.

After the African Cup in June 29, in Marrakech (Morocco), we will know all 22 countries that will face each other in Lyon in January to become the world’s best pastry nation during the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie Finale.

This 2018 European Pastry Cup was the first to inaugurate a new configuration: the candidates’ kitchens were open to let a 360° visibility to the supporters. For the first time, alongside the trade show Gourmet Forum and thanks to the Oval Lingotto Fiere facility, the continental venue allowed 1,300 supporters to come and cheer the pastry champions.

The Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie also proposed animations to the public: Presentations and interviews of great Italian pastry chefs and partners, blind tests and ice cream tastings, outstanding chef demonstrations.

The Finale of the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie is held every two years in Lyon (France), and runs parallel to Sirha Lyon, the International Hotel Catering & Food Trade Exhibition.
