Sweet Rush: Sales and Expectations

When is the best time to talk about sweet rush if not when Christmas is approaching? It’s not the holiday if you don’t put cakes or chocolate on the table – or so consumers dictate – and for business that’s just great.

Who are the biggest sweet consumers, what are they looking for and what are their expectations for the coming year? World Bakers asked Euromonitor for answers to these questions.
The largest confectionery consumer You probably already know it, because the data from last year hasn’t changed and the US remains the largest confectionery market globally. The retail value sales of the US touched USD 31.6 billion; double that of second place – China. In third position was the UK, then Russia and Germany. Actually, we have to stop and look a while at the Germans – they are the biggest sweet consumers per capita in the whole world, eating 13 kilograms of sweets in a year. Over the same period the British ate 11 kilos and the Americans and a Russians ‘just’ 8 kilograms each.
