Kothalahimbutu, a plant native to Sri Lanka and South India has properties to control the blood sugar of patients suffering from diabetes.
Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL), the company which has a 60% market share both in value and volume terms in the local biscuit market, launched its latest manufacture, the Kothalahimbutu health biscuit on Tuesday, reported The Sunday Leader.
“A biscuit is identified as a snack, especially among diabetics who want to have one before a meal,” Dr. Sirimal Premakumar of the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), a government research arm, told reporters.
Kothalahimbutu, because of its low Glycaemic Index (GI) is ideal for diabetics, he said. According to him Kothalahimbutu has a GI ratio of 30, whereas for diabetics, any food which has a GI ratio of more than 50 may be unhealthy.
CBL together with ITI, has, over a span of six years, developed the Kothalahimbutu biscuit for an undisclosed sum.
CBL Chairman and Managing Director Mineka Wickramasingha saw enormous potential for his company’s newest product in the export market, especially the Japanese market. CBL exports its products to 45 countries.
