La Lorraine & Delhaize Launch More Sustainable Bread Range

Belgian consumers can now purchase more sustainable bread thanks to a new step in the partnership between Delhaize and La Lorraine Bakery Group. The key driver of this project is Belgian wheat that is grown using regenerative farming techniques. The first 3,000 tonnes have already been harvested, leading to wheat with a carbon footprint that more than halves compared to conventional wheat.

The first volumes of the Belgian regenerative wheat were harvested in 2023 and were processed into flour, destined for the “Rustik” bread range (8 loaves of bread). Since its launch, the “Rustik” range has represented artisanal breads full of flavour through the use of Belgian flour, sourdough and a long resting time. The dough is folded by hand and the loaves are baked on stone. By using regenerative wheat, these breads now also have a CO2 footprint that is up to 40% lower than bread made from conventional wheat.2 The CO2 calculation of this Belgian regenerative wheat is based on primary data from the farmers, is done via a certified platform and has then audited.

Regenerative agriculture is key to achieve CO2 reduction and a healthier soil. Agricultural expert Arvesta guides farmers in choosing the most appropriate sustainable farming practices – such as the increased use of natural fertilisers and cover crops, minimal tillage and more crop rotation – that restore the balance in our ecosystems instead of depleting our natural resources. The result is healthier and more fertile soil that is able to store more carbon from the atmosphere and increased biodiversity. When switching to regenerative farming practices, farmers implement new techniques and technologies, which can initially lead to higher costs or lower yields. To encourage farmers to switch to regenerative agriculture, this partnership provides an additional remuneration model for participating farmers. In recent weeks, these Belgian farmers have been harvesting the second generation of this regenerative wheat.
