Puratos Reports Scope 1 And 2 Carbon Neutral Milestone

Puratos has reached carbon neutrality across its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, marking a significant sustainability milestone for the bakery, patisserie and chocolate ingredients supplier.

The Brussels-based company said the achievement follows continued energy-efficiency improvements, increased use of renewable energy and responsible offsetting initiatives. Puratos has reduced emissions per ton produced by nearly 50% compared with its 2016 baseline, while all electricity sourced across its operations has been 100% renewable since 2023.

The milestone was announced in the company’s newly published 2025 Sustainability GRI Report, which also outlines further progress across its global manufacturing network. Puratos invested EUR4.9m in 38 energy-efficiency projects last year, including expanded on-site solar panel coverage, which now spans 105,834 square meters.

At its Lummen site in Belgium, one of the company’s ten largest facilities, a new wind turbine already covered half of the site’s electricity needs in 2025. Puratos said 10% of its total electricity requirement is currently generated on-site through solar panels and wind energy. Twenty of its production facilities around the world now hold official carbon-neutral certification.

“Reaching carbon neutrality in our direct operations is a proud achievement for Puratos, as the entire food industry works to reduce its environmental impact,” said Francesca Angiulli, Sustainability Director at Puratos. “It represents years of investment, innovation and commitment from teams across the business. We believe we have an important responsibility to help build a more sustainable future for the sector. This ambition is embedded in our product development, our sourcing decisions and the way we support our customers in developing more sustainable bakery, patisserie and chocolate products. Looking ahead, our focus is on reducing Scope 3 emissions too – where collaboration with suppliers, farmers and customers will continue to be essential.”

Puratos said the achievement forms part of a broader strategy to reduce its environmental footprint through greater energy efficiency, cleaner energy sources and deeper decarbonization across the value chain. The company is also expanding its focus to Scope 3 emissions, mainly linked to raw materials such as cocoa, dairy ingredients, sugar and wheat. In early 2026, Puratos submitted Net Zero science-based targets to the Science Based Targets initiative.

The report also highlights progress in responsible sourcing. Puratos now sources 38.2% of its cocoa through Cacao-Trace, its proprietary certified sustainable cocoa program, which supports 31,795 cocoa farmers across key growing regions. The company also sourced 37.3% of its fruit in 2025 through Field to Fork, its local and transparent sourcing program.

Puratos has also introduced a regenerative agriculture commitment focused on wheat sourcing. The company aims for 50% of its global flour volumes to support the transition to regenerative agricultural practices by 2030, alongside a targeted 30% reduction in associated carbon emissions.
